Has anyone tried RAW on a 740K Toucam, does it work / improve quality ?

IMHO, RAW mode is interesting for B&W cameras. In colour, you will have
to reprocess the .avi so that it can be used by a stacking software like
Registax.
But I use the optimized color mode for planetary webcam, and find an
improvement in quality of pictures : less noise, "smoother" pictures.
You can compare her
http://images.ciel.free.fr/Eversion/Planets/Saturn.html between the
first pictures (normal mode) and the next ones (optimized mod).
I will try this mode with the Moon when it will be a bit higher

RAW mode is an excellent and remarkable bit of international cooperation,
hacking the Philips firmware to allow access to the preset image processing
settings. It was achieved through the QCUIAG. Yahoo group
I use it on my B+W SC3 Vesta based webcam. The most important thing is does
for me is it eliminates the "ears" problem you get, particularly on long
exposures which is caused by the "sharpening" that the Philips firmware
does. On colour cams it is a bit more complicated because you have to
reconstruct the Bayer pattern (software like K3CCDtools looks after this for
you though) If you have any technical questions about it, there is a yahoo
group TWIRG where the developers hang out (A spin off from QCUIAG)

Hi Robin,

Actually, you do the opposite. The RAW mode causes the CCD bayer pattern to
be visible in the images returned from the camera, so you need software to
reconstruct a proper colour image (using various interpolation techniques).
But it is true that K3CCDTools2 can do this for you.

The difficulty with colour RAW at the moment is that in order to focus
properly, you need "real time debayering", and K3CCDTools doesn't do that (I
believe that possibly a few other programs can do it... AstroSnap?).

For bw chips the RAW mode is completely transparent to the user, and very
effective.

Thanks Robin for the info.

The website gets very confusing trying to work exactly what you do need to
do !. As you say there appears to be the conversion you describe but also
mentions AviRAW and NON RAW macro, I'll have to give it a go, it looks like
you can convert back to the original software.

To see some nice results, utilising RAW mode, surf over to Kevin
McCarthy's site at:
