Default Launching a pre-damaged shuttle

So a window cover came off and damaged tiles on the OMS pod- that's no
reason to scrub the launch, is it?:

Not if you put enough duct tape on it.

The freakin' window cover was apparently held on with tape to start with.

NASA just doesn't use your garden variety 100 MPH duct tape. They
use special government issue ( very expensive ) 17,000 MPH duct tape.

Seriously (I assume Pat's question WAS serious) if THIS ISN'T reason to
delay/scrub/completely abandon the launch WHAT IS?

Is it institutional or organizational (or national) pride riding on this
launch that makes it so important that obvious pre-flight problems like
this are not going to make people back down?

Is preasure from above (i.e. higher up the chain of demand ... er sorry ...
command in government)?

Is the crew happy with the latest news? Are they allowed a call on whether
or not the vehicle they've got to risk thier lives in is launch/space
worthy?

If Safety is paramount fix the vehicle before launch.

If there are other priorities on the schedule the
public/world-at-large/whoever-cares deserves to know who is pushing so hard
for this launch.

I've lived through two shuttle accidents already. I would prefer not to see
a third just because someone ignored the obvious problems.

Of cause a scrub now will probably kill/seriously damage the current program
and render a whole lot of voters jobless or otherwise less well off.

They did fix it (assuming you're just talking about the damage from
the falling window cover). Took about an hour, apparently. On what
grounds would you scrub the launch? That this was some sort of "ill
omen" or something?

The sun has just come up in Florida. I've been sitting here looking at
Discovery on NASA TV. It's strange- I guess that knowing STS's days
are numbered makes it look different. She looks kinda old and obsolete
now. Wasn't like that before.

Oh well, I just bought a "new" car. A 1952 Morris Minor. Great car. I don't mind
"old and obsolete" so much, I guess. Then again, I'm not planning on taking it
into LEO anytime soon, at least until I find one of the old superchargers for it

Something where the repair and certification therof, takes longer than
two hours...

(Snip conspriracy/handwringing )

If Safety is paramount fix the vehicle before launch.

Did you not bother to check CNN last night ? They DID fix the damaged part.

If there are other priorities on the schedule the public/
world-at-large/whoever-cares deserves to know who is pushing so hard
for this launch.

No proof offered of " pushing " ? Claim fails.

No proof of anything offered ? "Concern" fails.

....I take it you only read the initial report, and not the follow-up.
The damaged tiles - there were only 4 - were all repaired. The Launch
Director was prepared to scrub if the damage was not field repairable
as well.

Do a little research before you start flaming NASA, son...

If there was a problem with the vehicle - you'd have a point.

The problem is with a very minor piece of auxilary equipment.

They replaced the damaged part- I'd still be queasy about this though:
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewsr.html?pid=17313
Meanwhile, thunder and lightning at the Cape:
"Editor's note: Dark clouds are gathering over KSC - and they do not
seem to be moving very fast. It is raining and loud thunder can be heard
nearby. Meanwhile, due to heavy power usage, the main generator here at
the press site just went out leaving much of the immense media swarm
without some of their systems. A stage 1 lightning alert is in effect
and people have just been told to take cover. So far the WiFi is still
working. 12 PM EDT"
