Holy ****!

Ames Tribune - June 1, 2005
Ref: http://www.amestrib.com/site/news.cf... AG=461&rfi=9

The work of an Iowa State University assistant professor has
made its way into the Smithsonian Institute. Holy ****! This
is a creationist book, attempting, among other things, to knock
of the Copernican Principle.

The Copernican Principle is a basic statement in physics that
there should be no "special" observers. The term originated in
the paradigm shift from the Aristotelian model of the heavens,
which placed Earth at the center of the Solar system because it
appears that everything revolved around Earth. The Copernican
Principle is one of the most successful scientific hypotheses in
the history of science.

Sam,

I agree with you wholeheartedly...this is a very sad state of affairs.

How is this significantly different from the anthropic principle? I
don't see this as an argument for intelligent design, nor much of an
attack on the Copernican principle. Mostly I see it as a logical fallacy
(a truism, really). Seems like this guy is just dredging up a largely
discredited view of things.

Chapter 12 is an attempt to discredit the Copernican Principle.

I gave my copy of the book to Fritz Franzen*--cautioning that he
should not read it if he didn't want to raise his blood
pressure. Some weeks later Fritz wrote a scathing "book report"
to me by email. He was disgusted!

Concerning the chapter on the Copernican Principle, he wrote,
"The authors set up a straw man imbuing the Copernican Principle
with a number of ridiculous attributes that they then disparage
and in so doing imply that they are destroying a scientific
theory. Irritating rubbish!"

*Fritz [Hugo] Franzen is Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at Iowa
State University.

Are you the Master Censor?

I have not read the book and may never read it. Last I checked it was
not against any creed, code or law for anyone to write a book
expressing their ideas. The last I checked there was no censor for the
Smithsonian to house books they so choose to include in their library.
The last I checked your tax money was not the sole source of income to
operate the Smithsonian. We already know your point on this. But
others have not made any decissions.

Perhaps we were wrong about Piltdown Man all along...

If I understand this correctly, to help spark sagging ratings, the
Draconian has hired a long-lost descendent of Piltdown Man, who's very
much alive and teaching at ISU, who, in conjunction with a senior fellow
from a cesspool company, plan to team up and produce a Survival TV Show
based loosely on the Scopes Monkey trial, sponsored by the Draconian.

Makes perfect sense to me...
