I was wondering if LIGO has officially recorded any occurrences of

Any idea on what any difficulties they may be having?

Here is their web site: http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/ M Any idea on what any difficulties they may be having? Everything? I'm sure that the Web site goes into more detail, but it helps to appreciate the magnitude of the signal they are trying to measure. Quoting from their Web site, they are trying to measure a change of "10^{-16} centimeters, or one-hundred-millionth the diameter of a hydrogen atom, over ... 4 [kilometers]." That's one part in 10^{21}. For comparison, 10^{21} meters is about 100,000 light years, so what they are trying to do is equivalent to measuring a distance of 100,000 light years to an accuracy of 1 meter. -- Lt. Their newsletter: http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/LIGO_web...ws/0503cit.htm is positive and indicates they are making good progress. Their newest project is Einstein@home: http://www.physics2005.org/events/ei...ome/index.html I signed up but have not started yet ... Well, bottom line, there are no big problems, other than what Joseph Lazio indicated of course ... |
