Default Spirit Final Resting Spot Guesses

Anyone feeling competitive? Just for the heck of it, and because it was
fun, I took a stab at guessing where Spirit has come to rest, based on the
landing ellipse as shown he

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2003/pdf/1061.pdf

This image from Space.Com:

The DIMES images from the marsrover.jpl.nasa.gov site:

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit.html

It's an unabashed WAG, with a little help from the above data. I can't
claim to have interpreted it exactly right, but I'll be interested to see
how close I got.

My guess is in this image he

http://tinyurl.com/3dnub

It's a 650k .jpg image. The blue oval marks the spot where I am guessing
Spirit might have come to rest, although maybe it will end up being a little
farther north and/or a little farther downtrack. The blue oval is a couple 2
or three miles in length. The entire image is contained in Gusev crater.

Comments? Other guesses?

Jon

How long will it take NASA to determine the exact coordinates of the landing site?

I'm sure they are working on it feverishly now. I suppose they could ask
the "Martian Government" ( Martian Press Reporting post ;-)

IIRC, the chute deployed slightly later than anticipated. The DIMES images
have given a good fix during the entry - I think they are slightly downtrack
of where they expected to be - perhaps ten or fifteen km. Once they narrow
down the probable location, I think they'll try some imaging from either
Odyssey or MGS, given the technique described he

http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/.../04/index.html

That could be definitive. I don't know what other techniques they use in
precisely locating the lander on the surface.

Radio triangulation, IIRC. The fact that we can also go and get a visual
triangulation on it wrt observable points *from the ground* will
probably help... ;-)

There's an interesting if brief article on how they pinpointed the exact
location... used some specialized resources that we didn't have access to

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/spotl..._20040105.html

At least, I imagine they've pinpointed it by now but perhaps not updated
the web site with all the other work going on?
