Hi gang. Just read that a band called "Blur" created the phone home beacon
for the mars rover. I am not a big fan of the band but found it an interesting choice. Is there a website with an audio file of it? Thanks. DB. |

Blur wrote a tune to be used by the (apparently) failed British "Beagle-2" Mars lander, not the American "Spirit" lander which successfully landed two days ago. Beagle-2 did not feature a Mars rover. The tune was to have been transmitted back to Earth by Beagle-2 once it landed on the Martian surface, but of course it was never heard as no signal has been received from the spacecraft. You can hear Blur's tune at http://www.beagle2.com/resources/blursignal.htm. Justin |

How did the powers that be come about making the decision to use a band like BLUR? They are a somewhat new band with a small following. Why not choose The Stones or AC/DC, or Iron Maiden for that matter? Was there a contest or something? Thanks. DB |

Blur got themselves involved back in 1998 I believe. They actually recorded a song called "Beagle 2" which was released with the "No Distance Left To Run" single. Some of the revenue from that single was used to raise money for the Beagle 2 project. Blur also persuaded a contemporary British artist (whose name escapes me at the moment) to come up with a designb for a calibration target image for Beagle 2's imagers. IIRC, Blur's song "Beagle 2" formed the basis for the 9-tone tune that Beagle 2 was to transmit to Earth once it landed on the surface. It's somewhat remeniscent of Luna 10's transmission of the "Internationale" from lunar orbit in 1966. A simple Google search should yield this information for you... Justin |

They are a somewhat new band with a small following. They're not that minor in .uk; one of the well-known names of the 1990s, I'd have said. As I understand it, it was serendipity; one of the band members was aware of and enthusiastic about the project, met Pillinger, click click click and they ended up providing some PR (and, at one point, funding underwriting) for it. The tune was more a publicity trick than anything else... -- -Andrew Gray |
