NASA RESEARCH SUPPORTS ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT IN MESOAMERICA

NASA and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) joined
with
other U.S. and Central American partners to launch an innovative, Web-based,
environmental management system. NASA is supporting the system with USAID;
the
World Bank; the Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the
Caribbean
(CATHALAC); the Central American Commission on Environment and Development
(CCAD); the City of Knowledge, Panama; and Cable & Wireless Panama.

WHAT: Inauguration and demonstration of the Regional Monitoring and
Visualization
System for Mesoamerica (SERVIR). It is a mapping and visualization system
using
satellite imagery and other data for environmental management and disaster
support. It enables scientists, educators and policy makers to monitor and
forecast ecological changes and respond to disasters. SERVIR provides user-
friendly, free interactive on-line tools. SERVIR is the initial Mesoamerican
contribution to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems.
