Much has been said about getting the cost to orbit down to $100 or even $10
per pound. I decided to look at what some people are spending right now to get from one place to another. I took as my example a round trip from Dulles Airport to Sydney, Australia. Assume you, and your carry-ons, weigh 204 pounds, and you have 66 pounds of checked baggage. Then you are transporting 270 pounds. Per Expedia: The First Class airfare for that trip is approximately $14,900, or about $55 per pound. (The lowest Coach airfare is approximately $1,900, or about $7 per pound.) People are flying first class on that route every day. That makes $100 per pound to orbit look very reasonable. Tony S. |
