I saw a dob at the 2001 RTMC that had the main mirror in a box and the
secondary was on a single rod that held it mounted about 6ft in front of the main mirror and the eyepiece was on a small mount to it's side. A One Beam truss. -- The Forgotten http://home.inreach.com/starlord/forgotten.htm SIAR www.starlords.org Telescope Buyers FAQ http://home.inreach.com/starlord Car Fund Page Update http://www.bishopcarfund.netfirms.com/ "John Savard" wrote in message ... Finally, on my web page, at http://home.ecn.ab.ca/~jsavard/science/opt03.htm which is my page on telescope mountings, I give a description of a telescope design I had thought of some time ago. My goal was to minimize the expenditure on optical components, allowing one to purchase common, standard parts, and to produce a telescope that could be mounted on an equatorial fork mount. Thus, the telescope should effectively have a short, stubby tube, like a Schmidt-Cassegrain, with the eyepiece close to the primary mirror and the center of gravity of the telescope. But I wanted high optical quality - and thus a small central obstruction for maximum contrast. To build it from standard parts, easily available off the shelf from suppliers meant the design couldn't be too exotic... the resulting telescope has just two flaws. The secondary mirror is mounted a great distance from the primary, and has to be held by a very lightweight framework. This may be asking too much of even the Serrurier truss. And, for a 10" telescope, with one typical set of parameters, a 40mm eyepiece - about the lowest power 1 1/4" barrel eyepiece one can get - yields 400x magnification, or 40x per inch. A 25mm eyepiece yields 640x, already over the limit. So the telescope is only good for one thing, observing near the limit of possible magnification!
