So....what do you think really happened to Beagle as it tried to land?
Didnt the Spirit rover come down within a few miles of the centre of the target ellipse?, if the same happened with beagle wouldnt that have put it in the area of that large crater and surrounding debris? Just a guess though........ |

Just a guess though........ Can't really say. I must admit I'm not a big fan of the bouncing bomb approach, but Spirit landed OK. We'll see how the second lander (or should that be bouncer?) gets on. Just a guess though........ My best guess would be that the airbags failed. Apparently they didn't have much time to test them in the final configuration. - Michael |

Fossa writes Didnt the Spirit rover come down within a few miles of the centre of the target ellipse?, if the same happened with beagle wouldnt that have put it in the area of that large crater and surrounding debris? The latest predictions show that wasn't the case and the large craters were in fact on the edge of the landing ellipse. see the media briefing for 7th January 2004. http://www.beagle2.com/resources/video-album.htm -- David Entwistle |

I did get that impression too, whether that really was the case or whether it was the result of the way the documentary was put together im not sure. They certainly seemed to have problems with them. Also, during the tests, I noticed that when the airbags were released from the lander thay seemed to remain on top of it. |
