Hi,
As a newbie I am confused with Red Shift 5. 8-( I looked at the magnitude on Bode's Nebula which is listed as +6.93. Then opened the visibilty windown in Red Shift and noticed that the magnitude was listed as +24.9? I am obviously missing something here, surely the magnitude cannot vary that much? Martin |

(Skymap Pro tells me it's M81) Giving a magnitude to 2 decimal places is wildly excessive unless you say precisely where you are drawing the line, but it's obvious Red Shift is doing something wildly wrong - wouldn't be the first time. The Saguaro Astronomy Club database lists it at 6.9 but Skymap also lists B and V magnitudes of 7.8 and 7. -- Save the Hubble Space Telescope! Remove spam and invalid from address to reply. |

Hi Jonathon,
Thanks for the info. I assume then that Red Shift can be a bit inaccurate at times then? 8-(( Regards, Martin |

Martin I looked up M81 on Cartes Du Ciel and it gave a magnitude of 6.9 as you reported, but it also said that the angular size was 11.5' x 24.9' Is it possible that you mis-read the angular size as the magnitude? Just a thought. Owen |
