. .. Tonight, I had my first view of both Saturn and Jupiter through my newly arrived 5" Orion. Absolutely gorgeous. I didn't quite know what to expect. Both my girlfriend and I really enjoyed watching the two planets. I can't wait to get out of the city and look for deep sky objects. Congrats on first light! Saturn and Jupiter are great the first time and still great the 753rd time. Clear Skies Chuck Taylor Do you observe the moon? It is easily visible from my very light polluted back yard in San Diego. Also try M41, M44, and M67 (all star clusters). All are visible with binoculars (M44 is even occasionally a naked eye object) from my back yard. |

![]() Congrats on your viewing! I was out tonight with my 60mm looking at Saturn and Jupiter, sure is exciting the first time and every time there after! When my 4 1/2 gets back from the shop I plan to do some deep sky observing to. Good Luck and Clear Skies! Tom Wales |

There are lots of Deep Sky Objects that can be viewed from ones back yard in a 5 inch scope, of course a dark site makes it easier. M46 and M47 are close to each other and quite nice in a 5 incher. M35-38 are high in the sky right now are interesting clusters. Most Messier clusters are doable from a relatively polluted location in a 5 inch scope. Not sure which scope you have, one exciting thing to do is to just sweep the sky using a low power eyepiece and see what you see. jon |

Yeah, they're lovely planets alright. The first time I ever saw them was
through a friend's 3 inch Tasco (of course, this wasn't your typical poor Tasco of today). The night was particularly steady and magnification was boosted to close to 200x. The Cassini division of Saturn stood out quite well and at times I thought the Enke division was visible, although I doubt it really. I could see Titan and the rings were at their maximum that year. With Jupiter, several bands could be seen and with good amounts of color. The four moons stood out well and one was casting a shadow on the surface of Jupiter. We were at a dark sky site at the time and visited many Messier objects that night also. I'll never forget the greenish glow of M42 or the vastness of M13. I think you'll really enjoy your scope. A 5" has enough aperture to provide some rewarding views of DSOs from a dark sky site. Ash "..." wrote in message . ..
