------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5867 From: Donald Rosenfield cardar@c... Date: Wed Mar 10, 2004 10:27pm Subject: several questions? Jim? Why don't you mention that Burgess Optical has an excellent 30-day full return policy? And your, "All too often, you get what you pay for." doesn't seem to apply to the Burgess/Back line of optical goods. While none of us -- save Bill -- have seen the BO Premium Binoviewer, I would expect at around $200 it compares nicely with a Denkmeir(sp?). After all, the BO triplet refractor at $2000 (the 180mmf7) compares with the competition at $8-10,000. Clear skies and defunct streetlights, Donald ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I like this the most: 1. After all, the BO triplet refractor at $2000 (the 180mmf7) compares with the competition at $8-10,000 The very first competitor's product.... right! TMB's 175mm F/8 at $13000 2. Burgess/Back line of optical goods. ;) Donald, may I ask you? 1. Is the famous 1026 achromat does utilize TMB-designed objective? 2. Is is true, that new BO (China) binoculars have TMB-designed objectives in them? Are they KzFS-based 3x-better then achromat correction??? 3. Is the 180mm F/7 telescope with CNC tube and CNC focuser is an APO? Did I understood you correctly? They are APOs? Where we can test and buy them? 4. Where are these new 6" F/8 TMB-designed,KzFS-based, 5-x times color improved, APO triplets for less than $1000???? I know, they were decreased in promised size to 127mm. But where they are???? 5. Where the replacement 102mm F/6 ordinary achromats (promised in no longer than 1 months after defective objectives were shipped back to giant optical plant in China)???? Or they still approaching US's west coast on a "slow boats"?? 6. Where these promised 9" refractors, 11" and 16" Maksutov-Cassegrains, GO-TO mounts???? Even focuser knowbs and adjustable 2" diagonals were not delivered! How this speaker can design and produce all above? All these things simultaneously??? How many more idiots will believe in these tales? V.D. |

![]() How many more idiots will believe in these tales? HI Valery: Well, people want to believe in miricles. ;-) Bill Burgess is a nice guy, and sells very nice bargain Chinese equipment. That that I've used, while I'm sure it will make a lot of people happy, is no different from the rest of what's coming in from China. I would especially doubt this person's speculation about the binoviewer. If there's one area where you REALLY, REALLY get what you pay for, it's in binoviewers. I don't think the Denkmeier gang have much to worry about! ;-) Peace, Rod Mollise Author of _Choosing and Using a Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope_ Like SCTs and MCTs? HI Valery:
Well, people want to believe in miricles. ;-) Bill Burgess is a nice guy, and sells very nice bargain Chinese equipment. That that I've used, while I'm sure it will make a lot of people happy, is no different from the rest of what's coming in from China. Unfortunately it is quite different from what is coming out of China... In February of 2003, I was thinking of buying the Orion 100mm F6 scope when I saw the offer for the BO scope, seemed like a reasonable deal and offered some improvements over they Synta. NO eyepiece but tube rings, 2 inch diagonal, a 7x50 finder and two speed focuser. Delivery was to be in March... Compared to that Synta at $250, the BO seemed to be a $300 scope, maybe even a $350 scope offered to the first 100 takers at $200. I signed up for the $200 102F6 in February of 2003 with that promised delivery in 1 month. I think my expectations were reasonable, optics compareable to the Synta with a bit nicer mechanicals... ------ As you probably know, given the delay times, this delivery date had to have been bogus from the start. And then when the scopes arrive, in october or november, "problems" with the objectives.. I think Bill just expected too much from these F6 Achromats, I expected no better color correction that the100mm F6 Synta scopes.... I have followed too many "An Achromat is an Achromat threads to believe otherwise.... But others had unrealistic expectations, fueled by the fact that the prototype 102F6 scopes had baffles that reduced the effective aperture to something like 80mm, making the scope effectively an 80mm F7.5 scope rather than a 102mm F6 scope. Pretty easy way to get some nice performance.... Anyway.... Finally, after nearly a year of waiting and no solution, folks on the list were given three options, 1) buy the scopes "as is" for $150 and wait for an improved "semi APO" objective that would cost another $100, 2) Just wait, 3) get a refund and wait. With the guess that these objectives were actually decent, I chose to take the scope. While in general it seems that has been the case, what I didn't count on was that the optics had not been tested prior to shipping so that while the color problem seems is not an issue, my particular scope has severe Astigmatism and there is no repair possible until the new objectives arrive. The astigmatism makes the scope unusuable, best focus is a cross rather than a point. One line is a bright white/yellow, the other is red and slightly shorter. "Splitting Castor" results in two crosses that are similar in size to the 4 arc second separation of Castor.. Tried various things, rotating the elements, the problem seems to be in the rear element. The basic mechanics of the scope seem to be a cut or two above the Synta scopes, nice focuser etc... Bottomline he Valery hit the high points, BO needs to deliver these 102F6 Achromats as promised with the promised diagonals, two speed focusers etc, before moving on to far more ambitious projects.
