Default Jupiter oddity

Approximately 9:40pm 02/24/02 Eastern time while looking at Jupiter I
seen a tiny black dot run across the disc of Jupiter. It took a total of
maybe 3/4 to a full second to do this. The size of this thing relating it
to what I seen on the planet would be about 1/4 to 1/2 of a band on Jupiter.

I had just finished a roll of Film on M42 and a roll of Jupiter and
decided to just to a little gazing. After maybe a minute of gazing letting
my eye catch as much detail as it could I seen this dot run from the eye
piece right side to the left side.. South to North visually. Just after
seeing this thing and taking a second to say "WOW" I looked at the clock,
9:41pm (cheap radio synched digital wall clock).

Meade 8" LX90 SCT
Scope - Orion shorty 2x barlow - 18mmSWA.
Perfectly Clear skies..
11*f - 59% humidity
Seeing - 9/10
Trans. - 10/10
In my Observatory
42*N - 77*W

Do you have floaters? If not, you may be getting them. I've had them for
about a year now, and I just can't seem to get use to them. It seems like
I'm always brushing away flies which are not really there. The floater
problem seems to be magnified when I look through the eyepiece. If you are
also experiencing light flashes (actually it looks like sparks), I would
suggest you see a doctor.

Such "light flashes" symptoms may indicate a retinal detachment which
is a very serious condition. The nearsighted or diabetic are at
greater risk of the condition.

Although it sounds like a floater, I was observing Jupiter at about 11:15 EST
and saw a small black dot in the NEB that seemed to move rather quickly. I
checked to see if it was a shadow transit, but none were occuring. I checked
back a short time later and it was gone. Maybe we're both seeing things????

It could have been an Earth orbiting satellite.
Sounds like it transited the disc of Jupiter kind of slow, for a regular
orbiter. Could have been a geosync satellite.

I've seen the same on the Sun, twice, my wife confirmed it too, so it can't
be a floter.
She has good eye.

Maybe a high altitude earth orbiting satellite. I've see several “run” across the moon that looked about as you describe.

There is a report of a new dark spot on Jupiter. Was near the
longitude of the GRS. Have not yet imaged it. See following URL:

Clif,

It has either lightened up considerably, or the image in the
link was overprocessed. The image at the link below was
taken the other night, and while it does show something
there, it is hardly what I what call a truly dark spot.

More likely, it was just a low Earth orbit sattelite that
was seen, especially if it only took a second or two to
pass. The feature in question would rotate at the same
rate as the planet.

Here's the link to the image:

Thanks, Tom Davis
