Paper - The Temporal Aspect of the Drake Equation and SETI
Authors: Milan M. Cirkovic Tue, 10 Jun 2003, 8 pages http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0306186 Abstract follows - We critically investigate some evolutionary aspects of the famous Drake equation, which is usually presented as the central guide for the research on extraterrestrial intelligence. It is shown that the Drake equation tacitly relies on unverifiable and possibly false assumptions on both the physico-chemical history of our Galaxy and the properties of advanced intelligent communities. The importance of recent results of Lineweaver on chemical build-up of inhabitable planets for SETI is emphasized. Two important evolutionary effects are briefly discussed and the resolution of the difficulties within the context of the phase-transition astrobiological models sketched. _________________ (If you are looking for other SETI science papers to read, and you haven't seen my previous posts, consider visiting my website at http://www.geocities.com/exosearch , which now has quite a few links!) Good page! The article about gamma ray bursts delaying the evolution of intelligent life was interesting, but I'm still not really convinced. Granted that a sufficiently nearby GRB that happened to be aimed in our direction would cause a mass extinction; from what we know of Earth's evolutionary history, mass extinctions have on the whole been beneficial rather than harmful. This is interesting! The doomsayers say, look at the primian (sp?) mass extinction where 95% of the lifeforms perished! But, hey, wait a minute!, just hold on there buddy! :-), look at us now(!) a billion (or is it 1/2 billion?) years later!! Species died forever, sure, but life (for better or worse or indifferently) still flourishes on Earth regardless ... Good point! Al -- "Sore wa himitsu desu." Ok, I give, what does this mean? "That is a secret." It's a quote from the anime series 'Slayers Next' - watch the series and you'll see why the line is worth quoting ^.^ -- "Sore wa himitsu desu."
