Default Refund or Exchange

This evening, as I was leaving Wal-Mart with a cartload
of reasons for living, and dying, I spied a gentleman not
quite racing as he should've been towards customer
service with a large box that I had no trouble at all
identifying. It was one of those...

...."TELESCOPES!"

Hooray! He was going to get a refund...I hope!

I did so want to speak to him, to warn him, especially if I
had followed behind and eavesdropped only to find that
instead he wanted an...EVEN EXCHANGE???

Say it ain't so!

Alas, but I did not.

Besides, even if he had sought a refund, he probably
would've bought a deer stand in its stead.

Alan,

Believe it or not...the same thing happened to me today at a Sam's Club. A
man and his wife were looking very closely at one of those Meade (made for
department store only) telescopes. I asked if they were buying a telescope
for their child, and they responded, yes. It was to be a special Christmas
gift for their 12 year old son who shows a deep interest in astronomy. I
spoke with them for a while, telling them to pass on this plastic wonder and
showed them where they could buy a real telescope for nearly the same amount
of money. After speaking to them briefly, they put that dreadful plastic
telescope down, thanked me profusely and were on their way. In a way, I
feel like Santa...a nice little boy will not get one of these garbage scopes
for Christmas because I intervened.

He probably could have seen more from the deer stand.

Just for the information of us poor foreigners, what is a deer stand?

It is an elevated platform from which to shoot deer -- sort of like a
high duck blind. They're usually camouflaged and erected within rifle
shot of one or more deer trails.

So it's not just people over here in the UK that kill dumb animals for
sport.

Supermarkets abound, and by the time these would-be providers
were done acquiring the equipment and expending the time and effort
necessary to secure said dinners the price differential between the two
procurances will have become negligible, if not in favor of the first.

Therefore, the motivation is predominately, if not exclusively, for sport.

Mind you, however, that is not to preclude the necessity of controlling
the hardly-endangered deer population, though it nonetheless brings
to mind the senseless extinctions of several other species via the gun...

....and its most dangerous advocate.

The same could be said for amateur astronomy, why not just buy a book of
Hubble pictures and save the money. That's why city and country counties
should be in different states, we misguided country folk will hunt deer
and the city folks can continue hunting each other ...

I, too, attempted to envision an astronomical comparison, but in vain,
for how might one compare the personal witnessing of a globular's spray
of stars to that of an innocent's spray of blood born primarily, as I have
demonstrated, of sport?

That's why city and country counties should be in different states, we
misguided country folk will hunt deer and the city folks can continue
hunting each other ...

Yet with the hunters and the hunted in both the country and the city
being the same dumb animals all around, and for sport still.
