Credophilia. http://users.bigpond.net.au/wanglese/Alien_recipes.html Wally, Although you don't go into it in detail in your excellent gourmet tome, the rule of thumb for earth creatures is that each creature has just enough brains to tan it's own hide. (Since Doc P brings up the issue, certain classes of humans may not meet this minimum standard, and may need to go with the Humpty Dumpty technique.) Do you know whether this holds true for the aliens? IIRC, some of them seem to have very large heads for their body size. Does this indicate surplus brain mass that could be used to tan other hides? (Perhaps sharing it with the classes of humans noted about to have insufficient of their own?) Or does the rule of thumb hold, with something about their skin requiring more brain matter per unit surface than Earth species. Or, alternatively, do these big-headed aliens have something else in their crania other than brain? That could explain quite a lot. Tom McDonald |

You are quite right about the effects of brain mass. However, experience has shown that in at least the case of the Greys, the brain size, though substantially large, is not as dense. It seems that Greys brains contain less actual mass, and the greater size is to allow larger blood vessels. It is suggested that this allows for a better transfer of heat, and is not so much for oxygen supply to the tissues. Infra red images of Greys, for instance, show that the head is radiating heat quite efficiently. Remember, Greys don't have sweat glands. So, in the case of the Grey, the brain mass does not supply even enough chemical to tan their own hide!!! However, for blues average about 200ccs of chemical when the brain is rendered. This, diluted as required does in fact allow for a substantial tanning. A common technique that has ben employed by several industries is to mix the hide of a grey with every 3.5 blues, as this is an efficient use of the biomaterial, and reduces wastage and pollutants. So the answer to your question is in the affirmative. Incidentally, DO NOT throw the leftover chemicals of aline skin tanning down the drain. This is a mild toxic pollutant. There are disposal centres which can dispose of the waste. Otherwise, mix it with 40 parts water and detergent, and use it to wash your car. I was thinking, however, of using the whole, raw brain, as is done, for instance, with deer hide tanning. I learned the technique in an 'old ways' outdoor school, so the rendering-down business isn't familiar to me. Brain tanning, as I'm familiar with it, works primarily because of the fat in the brain, not other chemicals. To help break down the hide fibers for softening, I just ****ed in the egg mixture; the acid in the urine is fine for softening leather. Of course, I don't know that aliens' brains _have_ fat in them. BTW, what type of alien, and what cut, work best for chicken-fried alien? Tom McDonald |
