Default Better choice of Spirit landing zone

I'd like to know why NASA avoided to take into consideration the
landing of at least one of its rover in one of the "strange" regions
of Mars.
As an example, look at photo m0400291
(http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/tube.jpg), or
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/forest.jpg or
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/marsspot.jpg or
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/marscell.jpg

I'd like to know why some people can post links that work (not to mention
reading the material on how and why the two sites for the MER rovers were
chosen).
