Why is Mars so red?

VideoTalk is an exciting new multi-media feature that discusses the
questions we hope will be answered by pioneering space exploration. See
and hear exactly what evidence we hope to find on the surface and in the
atmosphere of this rusty planet.

Why is Mars so red?

For the same reason that the earth is red.

You say the earth isn't red? Strip away our oceans,
our vegetation, and most of our atmosphere, and
look again.

Actually, isn't the interesting question "why is Mars so red, given that
it doesn't have the warm wet oxidising atmosphere that makes everything
rust on Earth ?". We have red soil in Devon, too.

Given time, iron will combine with oxygen even in the absence of
water.
