Default Shuttle to fly till 2015?

About the only way to continue Shuttle operations would be to kill the
Constellation program, unless Congress decides to substantially up NASA
funding.
It also means the Shuttle infrastructure (pads, etc.) can't be
converted over to Constellation till after 2015.
As usual during NASA's recent history, everything is all a confused mess.

Which is what Bush should have done in the first place; keep the
shuttle going though at least 2014, while temporarily ramping up
NASA's budget to cover Constellation R&D costs, and then when Orion
was flying and tested, begin the transition in earnest. It was a huge
mistake to retire the shuttle in the arbitrary 2010 date with no clear
way for either a commercial or government replacement.

It also means the Shuttle infrastructure (pads, etc.) can't *be
converted over to Constellation till after 2015.

I'am not sure I agree with that. We are doing it now with LC-39B once
STS-125 has been flown and there is no need for an "on demand" rescue
mission. We still have LC-39A, and some of the VAB highbays can be and
are being converted to support Ares white shuttle still continues to
fly at a lower flight rate 2-3 missions a year. We would not be in
this mess if the administation had shown better foresight. Thanks to
the crisis in Georgia, there is a mad scramble from congress to try
and at least get a flight or two or even an extra year extension for
the shuttle.

As a bit of a semi-related tangent, look for ESA to convert their ATVs
over from the Russian probe and cone docking mechanism to a CBM port,
if the Georgia fallout continues.

Something that politicians never show. They seem to enjoy getting
caught with their pants down, in more ways then one.
I look for them to come up with any excuse to take money away from
Orion. It may never get off the ground.
Puns intended.
