öNYC EVENTS FOR JULY 2008
----------------------
John Pazmino
NYSkies Astronomy Inc

www.nyskies.org

The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring
enclosing
New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural
items of special importance to City astronomers are also included.
Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to
change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor
know that you learned of its event thru NYC Events.
You may ask for previous NYC Events thru ',
because only the current issue is in the website. It is replaced by
next month's issue.
For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup
forum. Join NYSkies by visiting 'www.nyskies.org/yahoo.htm' and
picking either the email or website option.
All hours are Eastern Daylight Savings Time

Independence Day
--------------
Independence Day, July 4th, is a national holiday in the United
States. In 2008, Independence Day starts a three-day weekend with
abated business and commercial activity. Never the less, many astro
centers have events in this weekend. Please bear in mind that travel
to events may be impeded by heavier-than-normal road and rail
traffic,
adjusted schedules, and reroutes. Allow extra time and prepare for
unexpected contingencies.

General news
----------
Tens of readers caught a goof in the 'sky news' section of 'NYC
Events', June 2008. Mars passed thru the BEEHIVE cluster -- NOT the
Pleiades -- in late May. With 'NYC Events' read by myriads of
astronomers worldwide, thru our NYSkies website and the sci.astro.*
newsgroups, a booboo like that attracts notice from LOTS of you folk.
A second, more obscure, error in the June 'NYC Events' was tha
tthe Yankees discount for 7 games is $105, not $75. I thnak all of
you
for catching these glitches..
The Waterfalls exhibit, set for a mid July opening, fired up on
June 26th. A few readers noticed them on the 27th but none so far
visited the structures closeup. They are four skeletons of towers, 30
or so meters tall, fitted as human-made waterfalls. The towers seemed
complete in early June and now, end June, they are running. See July
1st for locatons.
By July, all of the 'school-year' schedule of events went into
recess for the summer, making NYC events a bit slimmer. Please
inquire
at the contacts, whether in the index or the main list, for opening
of
the fall schedule.

Event news
--------
The World Science Festival street fair on may 31 was clobbered by
a massive thunderstorm in early afternoon! Altho the rain lasted only
a half hour or so, the deluge soaked and dissolved most of the booths
beyond repair. The storm passed over, with sunshine and humid air for
the rest of the day. Several booths salvaged some of their displays
to
resume some operations.
We suffered the first major heatwave of the season on June 7-10
with temperature in the high 30Cs, no breeze, 100% humidity. What
rain
did come in late afternoon didn't temper the heat. The RAIN was hot
water! a cold front finally pushed thru, with a cool rain, to break
the spell.
A second, lesser, heat wave sweeped over the City on June 27-28.
It was broken by a major thunderstorm in afternoon of the 28th, to
bring in cooler weather.
NYC Events hits the street too early for the last event of June,
the Hubble Space Telescope presentation at the Explorers Club on
30th.
NYSkiers are making plans to attend.
July continues the 2008 season at Governors Island. Get the free
ferry at Battery Marine terminal. There are only limited services and
facilities on the island. Bring lunch and water. Stop at the
restrooms
in the adjacent Staten Island Ferry depot before going to the island.
The City University on June 28th started its summer series of
geophysics and environmental lectures on Governors Island on
Saturdays. They are a handy focal point for your visits. See the
listing for July 5th.
July 13 offers a ramble to Coney Island on the Transit Museum's
vintage train. In place of riding the regular train, why not rid in
the style your parents loved, and take your children along, too? You
get the afternoon in Coney Island, always a delight for all ages in
summer. Then ride back to the City refreshed and [sort of] cool.
July has two major starparties. The Summer Star party starts on
the 25th in Savoy MA at Shady Pines Campgrounds. Stellafane starts on
the 31st on Breezy Hill, Springfield VT. The overlap in dates allows
you to shuttle between the two shows, they being about an hour apart
by car.
On the 26th there is a free harbor boat ride starting from
Governors Island to explain the waters around the City. It's free,
but
you MUST be on time for the ride. Boat returns to the Island so you
can continue your visit.

Sky news
------
Weather in June was, uh, lousy! We got a couple clear nights, but
only so-so transparency. Most nights did let higher power be applied
to Saturn, double stars, and Jupiter.
Jupiter entered the evening sky with a surprise. He got THREE red
spots! There's the Great Red Spot since several centuries ago, the
Little Red Spot from 2006, and a NEW Red Spot 3 that erupted in early
May 2008. By end June LRS ws bypassing GRS. This is a peaceful
passage, with LRS a bit to the south of GRS. During July RS3 gains on
GRS for a conjunction in August. Because the two are at the same
latitude on Jupiter, there COULD be some sparks and smoke when the
two
meet up. I give under July 1 a table of GRS transits to help you
view
the red spots.
So far in June, the last month of the City's Milky Way spring
season there were no sightings. There has just no suitable weather to
allow the Milky Way to shine thru. 2008 is the first formal spring
season for viewing the Milky Way, with a closing on June 30th.
Mars, Regulus, Saturn skip around in the west for a last show
before leaving the evening sky by end month. On July 1st, Mars pass
Regulus; he passes Saturn on the 10th. The three are joined to their
left by the crescent Moon on the 6th.
Get your last looks at Saturn in the southwest. He is a glorious
target for any telescope, but hurry. He sinks into evening twilight
by
end month.
July 8-11 is the second chance this year for the manhattan
Stonehenge sunset. The weather can be thick with cloud and haze,
causing the Sun to sink out of sight several degrees above the
horizon. Yet we can get some very clear afternnons with a dazzling
Sun
searing its way into the sunset.
In the southwest is Porrima, the binary that swallowed up into a
single star in 2005-2006. It's separating gradually to allow smaller
scopes to resolve. By June, medium scopes may see two distinct stars
in Porrima. Get high power on it. Try it!
