Interested in the comments on the inspection of the other Sarj. I thought
there was no lubricant on this item, yet from the comments it sounds as if there is. Wear is to be expected of course, but from the comments the wear is uniform as one would expect it to be, an the design does push things to the edges, presumably as intended. This makes the behaviour of the other bearing even more puzzling, a it seems that the debris is randomly distributed, as would be the case if a foreign body of significant hardness was sticking then moving and sticking again. My feeling is that once the surface was breached down to below the chemically hardened areas, then it was doomed. If iyturns out to be a hardening fault, then the other face will not be any better. I wander is there any way they could fly another race ring up and replace it on orbit without losing the arrays and other stuff? In the end it may well be that the current mode of operation is the best you will get otherwise. On debris collection, I can recall a gadget we made to get iron filings out of a bearing once.... don't ask... which consisted of a piece of thin cork glued to a magnet, with the magnet in about a quarter inch from the edge of the cork. It was held like a scraper while the surface was slowly rotated and periodically emptied of its load of particles, mainly above the cork on the magnet. I cannot imagine a scaled up version big enough for this job though!!! I saw "sarj" and for some reason my brain said "toilet". Must be getting senile after all. Either way, I'll resubmit the joke after the pump post-mortem is released :-( OM -- ]=====================================[ ] OMBlog - http://www.io.com/~o_m/omworld [ ] Let's face it: Sometimes you *need* [ ] an obnoxious opinion in your day!
