"...veteran space actor William Shatner..." Space actor!? He was the
hammy star of a sci-fi-oriented soap opera 40 years ago. Forgive my
skepticism, but this is the same Discovery Channel that periodically
discovers the secret of the Pyramids -- alien builders. I'm skeptical
about that, too.

If Shatner is a 'space actor' then he should be able to act... and act
while in space. I say we put it to the test.

There are extreme hurdles in getting humans on Mars and coming back.
They should go for the "one-way, no way out" type of explorer maybe.

He may have been a little hammy, but Star Trek wasn't. I do find your
post a little hammy, however. ;-)

Would you want to be cooped up on a spacecraft with somebody like that
for a couple of years? ;-)

Even if you were the only person onboard? ;-)

That's why NASA rejected ideas like that when they were searching for
the Original 7.
