Default Teacher in Space...

Ya know, I know there are all kinds of scheduling issues with the
shuttle and whatnot, but isn't kind of dumb sending a teacher into
space when most kids in the US haven't even started classes yet?

I mean, the whole impact of what happened before the launch, the
buildup, the launch and everything were really a big waste. All they
can get out of it at this point is maybe a video of it to play in the
future...

This will no doubt be replayed endlessly on NASA TV, so all the kids will
get a chance to watch (if their teacher cares to show them).

True, but how often to kids get to watch something like this live anyway?
When Challenger was lost, very few classes in my high school were watching
it on TV. I know mine wasn't. But someone was watching it, because it
didn't take long for the news to circulate around the high school.

Most kids didn't seem to care much. Only the ones who cared about science
and/or teachers. It didn't take long for the stupid jokes to start. :-P

Regardless, there wasn't even the opportunity. I told my kids about
it (they're 8 and 4, a little young to grasp the enormity of
Challenger and whatnot) and we watched it take off from our front
yard, but they were largely unimpressed. It seems that schools could
benefit for more from something like this than a lot of garbage on the
curriculum now...

Interestingly though, its not summer vacation all over the world. They could
have made a lot more internationally in my view.

Right, but the shuttle is part of the US space program. You would
think that if we are paying for it, we would get the most benefit from
it...

i was in 6th grade when the challenger explosion and the teachers didn't
even care to even show the launch. They turned on the tv for a few
minutes and then shut it off.

When did they send a teacher in space?

Oh wait, you mean the former Teacher In Space backup who is now a
full-fledged astronaut and has "typical" astronaut duties with the teaching
opportunities as a secondary aspect of her job.

Her main role is "mission specialist" her secondary role is "teacher".

But what is there to watch? A bunch of overpaid astronauts floating
around accomplishing absolutely nothing except wasting tax dollars.

You are missing the whole point. This doesn't have anything to do with
children or education. It is all about putting a member of the nation's most
powerful trade union into space and sucking up to that union.

Dale

"it's for the children"... yeah, right. Ok yes I am jealous!!
