Don Herbert, who as television's "Mr. Wizard" introduced generations of
young viewers to the joys of science, died Tuesday. He was 89.

....I *barely* remember the final year of his first series on NBC, but
I still credit it as having triggered a nascent interest in the
sciences. His CBC-produced 1973 series I remembered far better, and
should have lasted quite a few more seasons than the one it did. But
that's the problem with kidvid; the ratings never really reflected
what kids were really watching. Otherwise, crap like "Scooby Doo" and
that ****ing Grape Ape would have never lasted more than a season.

I last saw him giving a live demo at the National Science Teachers
Conference, some few years ago. He was stammering and obviously having a
difficult time imparting his objective to the audience. He used the wrong
names of several chemicals and even did some outright dangerous things.
Despite teh decline, his audience was entirely captivated by being in the
presence of the man. I so much more enjoyed Don Herbert over Bill Nye, who,
though a qualified successor, is far too pre-packaged and slick. There was
something really outstanding about seeing science performed live by Mr.
Wizard.

Don was an inspiration for generations of fertile, young, minds. He was a
credit to education.
