Today marks an important date in space flight. It was 50 years ago
(April 30, 1954) that the last issue of the Collier's von Braun, et al. series came to an end. That issue had the articles Can We Get to Mars? and Is There Life on Mars. It was also a visual realization of von Braun's amazing Das Mars Projekt, brought to life by artists Chesley Bonestell, Fred Freeman and Rolf Klep. The series spanned the years 1952 to 1954. This series had a profound effect on a whole generation of young people who went on to space flight in their adult life. I have added to the article I wrote about this series : http://home.flash.net/~aajiv/bd/colliers.html |

I have added to the article I wrote about this series :
http://home.flash.net/~aajiv/bd/colliers.html BRBR Al, As a writer, I'm curious about the Collier's covers. With the magazine out of existence, who did you contact for permission to reporduce the copyrighted images? Does the parent company that published Collier's still exist? Thanks, Matt Bille ) OPINIONS IN ALL POSTS ARE SOLELY THOSE OF THE AUTHOR |

As to who owns or has all the original manuscripts, color seperations , stuff for the series, I wonder that myself. |

Does the parent company that published Collier's still exist? *Somebody* undoubtedly still owns the Collier's copyrights (assuming the stuff hasn't fallen into the public domain through age and/or failure to renew [a possibility back then]). Tracking down just who it is... could be complex. Note also that the copyright on the artwork used as part of the covers is potentially a separate issue. Collier's didn't necessarily buy all rights to the art, in which case other uses of the same paintings would require talking to the Bonestell estate (currently done via Ron Miller, I think). This might arise (I'm not sure) in connection with reproducing the covers. -- MOST launched 30 June; science observations running | Henry Spencer since Oct; first surprises seen; papers pending.

Historically such things generally were not thought to be of enduring interest, so they were often destroyed when their immediate practical utility ended. -- MOST launched 30 June; science observations running | Henry Spencer since Oct; first surprises seen; papers pending.

If its anything like with texts (first english language north american serial rights, anybody?), they probably bought some form of limited 'print once' rights, inc for money-saving reasons. But it makes for great fun when people forget this and go to ... oh, say re-release old magazines on a CD. -- Sander +++ Out of cheese error +++ |
