Saw this pic in this weeks AW&ST and had never seen the image workup
of the original Venera's as Mitchell has done. Truly spectacular.

That's the first time I've ever seen one that shows the horizon well.

Not sure by some of the wording on the site if its all reconstructed
or some small portion(that could not be photgraphed) of it is computer
extension of the existing sorround. I assume it would have to be if
the image was missing in the first place but you never know.. BTW
Pat, got my Mysterions DVD (and Kronos). Its amazing , close to 50
years after seeing it I could recall (more like sense as in "Deja Vu""
what was coming next while watching. Gotta say, for all the trash
Tokyo flicks this indeed has some artistry. They spent some time on
their FX, given some leeway I have to say I liked seeing it a second
time as well. The scene where the tank is sucked down in a whirlpool
of dirt and a tanker jumps from the turret into the spinning
maletstrom of earth was pretty decent. Remember it scared the hell
out of when I saw that scene as a kid.. All in all a great purchase ,
$17.00 at Amazon, thanks for the lead............Doc

When the Markalites are cranking up you are seeing one of the _classic_
scenes of sci-fi cinema.
Love that soundtrack also.
BTW; the Markalites are 600 feet in diameter across their reflector dish.

Well, he's sort of transparent due to the photo overlay, but other than
that....
"jumps from the turret" isn't the right phrase... he comes flying out of
there like JSDF Shermans had an ejection seat for the commander. :-D

Wouldn't you love to command an Alpha class aerial battleship, or save
the women of Japan from forced marriages to filthy over-confident
radiation-scarred mutated aliens...while wearing a stylish fedora?

God, I live for **** like that. :-)

I'll have to watch the tank scene again, in the once over it looked
like a 3d prop, happens so fast. The interbreeding thing is great
when one of the woman are reminded that she is on the list and gasps
and grimaces ("choose me, choose me her mind screams out"). What is
bedwear???? just a cape? a helmet (plastic or leather?). Do they set
up a soft music pillows or is the deed done mechanically deep in the
bowels of the earth in the empty lab lunchroom?.........Doc

Nay nay, (neh neh!). That's a hell of a DVD watched the entire
thing. The commentary section( directors) actually mentions that
tanker, and it was a "doll" as they describe it. While watching again
I slowed down and indeed it was a doll which really was you say
ejected quite forcefully from the turret. After the directors
commentary I have an entirely new perspective on Japanese Sci Fi. It
was interesting listening to them talking about using the self defense
forces in the film "with flamethrowers" and they discussed the odd
post war habit of Japanese directors putting a dance scene in every
movie. Appaently in Godzilla they mention that the dancers in that
scene are "painted" black. Anyway I would recomend this DVD with the
extras story boards, design drawings, sound track and commentary to
any body wanting to visit the early history of the destruction of
Japan etc.......Doc
