I still find this idolatry for Scott, and lack of praise for Amundsen
puzzling. Were Amundsen and his crew not extremely brave, gallant men,
and didn't they put up a class show? Perhaps not, but then they didn't
place themselves in such mortal danger: those qualities were wholly
unneeded.

They not only placed themselves in mortal danger, which is sometimes
necessary. They did so needlessly and stupidly. I agree, worshiping
this would seem to reward muddleheadedness. More than bravery is
required. But it does go a long way to explain the European
willingness to feed so many millions to the machine gun in WW I.
