Friday, October 6
Comet SWAN update: This nice binocular
comet is now 6th magnitude slightly
brighter than predicted as it moves
from the dawn to the evening sky,
passing below the north celestial pole.

Full Harvest Moon.

Saturday, October 7
Once the Moon is up in the east in
mid-evening, look to its left for
the stars of Aries.
Comet SWAN is passing about 1° south
of Cor Caroli tonight.

Sunday, October 8
There's a (slim?) chance that the
Draconid meteor shower will act up
around 23h Universal Time, when
Eastern Europe will be well positioned to watch.

Monday, October 9
Tonight the waning gibbous Moon occults
several Pleiades stars as seen from
North America. The stars will disappear
on the Moon's bright limb, where they
will be hard to see, and will reappear
from behind the invisible dark limb,
where you'll have to be looking at the
right moment.

Tuesday, October 10
Using binoculars, look for 6th-magnitude
Uranus 0.5° south of the 3.7-magnitude
star Lambda Aquarii.

Wednesday, October 11
The big Summer Triangle shines very high
in the west this month. Zero-magnitude
Vega is the brightest star way, way up
in the west; Deneb is even higher above
it, near the zenith; Altair shines farther
off to Vega's left, high in the southwest.

Thursday, October 12
Here's a binocular project near the Summer
Triangle: Find the red long-period variable
star R Aquilae (not far from Altair). The
star was magnitude 7.2 as of a few days ago.

This Week's Planet Roundup

Mercury (magnitude 0) is glimmering very low
in bright twilight, well to the lower right
of brighter Jupiter.
Venus and Mars are hidden in the glare of the Sun.
Jupiter (magnitude –1.8) is very low in the
southwest in twilight.
Saturn (magnitude +0.5, in Leo), rises around
2 a.m. and is high in the east by dawn.

It was nothing, Captain.

And now the sky has cleared as a seasonal cool dry east wind has blown
away the smog, leaving the sky crystal clear for viewing.

Afraid you may have missed Princess Darla's visit, although she is
always near. She might reappear.

Wouldn't it be funny if it snowed on Halloween?

H.J. ( Don't think that it ever happened around these parts. )

Never snow here that early, but frost on the pumpkin has been common
enough.

Thank you Earth Science Team Officers and no I didn't miss
Darla's comm messages for remember I'm on duty. My net response was
hijacked and not permitted to go through as many that I have advised you
about. None of my profound net messages before 2000 apparently exist due
to unknown reasons. I received her messages of Sil's fighting adventures
and well being. Her answers to saul are right on and affirmation of our
knight Officer Warhol. Fear not brave Space Officers our Majesty Darla
has returned and government net disinformation agents apparently must be
alarmed. Fear of the unknown is the worst enemy of progress make no
mistake about it.

Continue your excellent reports and monitoring our secret incoming Sean
friend comm new messages.

carry on,
Captain nightbat
