News descriptions speak of a wide, deep crater
where the intact Dnepr booster, half its fuel still on board, hit the ground. A shepard nearby, who witnessed it, has been interviewed from his hospital bed. But where are the photographs? Has anything been published anywhere showing the hole in the desert? Or is Soviet-era coverup back in effect, a la Panarin? Jim |

I assume it was unmanned otherwise there would be more press about it. JD |

NAZARBAYEV (chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 22 February 1990, elected president 1 December 1991) https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications...k/geos/kz.html I found this article, but nothing much more. http://www.geocities.com/launchreport/slr.html Jim |

And not to hold Kazakhstan forward as a model of openness, but I think there are other FSU republics that are more SU-like than it is (Belarus and Kyrgyzstan come immediately to mind). |

You wouldn't have read this in The Moscow News back in the Soviet era: http://www.mosnews.com/news/2006/07/30/rocket.shtml Here's an interesting photo of another Dnepr failing at lift-off (or cold launch in this case) : http://www.sploid.com/images/dneprygoodness.gif Pat |

I sent this email -- we'll see if we ever get a response: Just to confirm -- the tilting Dnepr rocket at http://www.sploid.com/images/dneprygoodness.gif is a cropped normal launch, made to look like it's going off course, right? I don't want my news clients getting all too excited as if it were a real image of a real event. Jim O www.jamesoberg.com NBC News space guy |
