NASA'S SPACE SHUTTLE DISCOVERY LAUNCH RESET FOR SUNDAY

NASA's launch of Space Shuttle Discovery at Kennedy Space Center,
Fla., was scrubbed today due to inclement weather. The primary
concern was the presence of anvil clouds and thunderstorms within 20
miles of the launch site.

The next launch attempt for Discovery's STS-121 mission to the
International Space Station is set for Sunday, July 2, at 3:26 p.m.
EDT. Commentary on NASA Television will begin with fueling of the
shuttle's external tank at 5 a.m. followed by full coverage at 9:30
a.m.

The forecast for Sunday shows a 60 percent probability of weather
prohibiting launch.

Erm, are there no windows in the morning then this time? Seems to me that in
the afternoon at this time of the year, you are going to get thunderstorms
in the same sort of places later in the day.

That is correct. The ISS orbit plane regresses westward so that the in-
plane time moves an average of 24 minutes earlier per day. So a particular
period that allows daylight launch and lit ET separation will always start
with a late afternoon launch, shifting gradually to a morning launch.

Seems to me
that in the afternoon at this time of the year, you are going to get
thunderstorms in the same sort of places later in the day.

Also correct. Can't be helped until NASA has validated its alternatives
(ground-based radar, wing-leading edge sensors) to return to night launch
ops.
