Sounds like 1500 people just gave up their jobs.

"Strikes" against this strike;

It's an economic strike, so Boeing can legally hire replacement
workers and fire the strikers.

The strike effects mostly govt and military products, not commercial.
Which are far more patient in letting schedules slip and remaining
as customers then the private sector.

Machinists can be replaced much easier than engineers, and have
a harder time finding new jobs.

The strike is occurring during record profits, when Boeing is best
able to weather the financial hit.

The strike is effecting a relatively small part of the company, which
is a low profit area to begin with.

The strike appears mostly over health benefits, which everyone is
dealing with, and not likely to inspire much public sympathy.

'Strikes' for this strike;

Unemployment in Florida is at a record low, so they should
be able to find jobs elsewhere.

Recommendation;

Accept the mediators suggestions and declare a moral victory.

Well, technically it should be "Heads up, Australia" or someplace. The
Star 48 doesn't fire until late in launch...

I was just reading an article on the apparent failure of the Northwestern
Airlines Strike.

Nope, but I grew up in a union town that had some knock down drag
out strikes over the years. One of my favorites was the year that
the big U.S. auto manufacturer parts plant in town went on strike and
the place was ringed by 24 hour a day picket lines. One day, an
innocent bystander, a woman on her way to the grocery store or some
such, made the mistake of driving past in her Honda Civic. The result?

Upside-down Honda!

I think the union won that contract.

Well, it depends on the failure mode postulated for the Star 48. If
the failure occurs after the end of the 2nd Centaur burn, then the
remaining stack (Centaur + Star 48 + New Horizons) is already in an
Earth escape trajectory. If there is no 3rd stage separation, the
stack will end up in solar orbit. Ditto if Star 48 separates but fails
engine start. The only way it might come back to Earth is if the stage
mis-orients and does an "ocean injection burn" a la Landsat 6.

OTOH, if there was a Star 48 processing problem that led to an
inadvertant stage separation or structural breakup during earlier
phases of launch, then it could be "heads up, Florida", or anywhere
along the ground track. The Environmental Impact Statement describes
failure probabilities and consequences for each phase of launch. One
interesting note is that the Star 48 for New Horizons has an additional
flight termination breakup system to prevent an intact stage from doing
a hard crunch of the spacecraft and RTG harder into the ground.

I hope some of them went to prison for a few years.

Let's see from this years financial analysis of Boeing.

Boeing is being forced to shutdown production of some lines wiping out
a good chunk of expected profit.
Airbus has now surpassed Boeing as the number one Commercial Airliner.
Boeing is expected to continue to lose foreign aircraft orders and is
currently not favoured to win any of the current bids currently active
for aircraft purchase. Note: This may change as the US is threatening
Pakistan unless they buy boeing.
The primary profit driver has been military defense contracts, rather
than commercial activities and their profits plummeted when they lost
some of the defense business.
It received a huge tax benefit to generate the profits it did report
further increased by the sale of assets.
No revenue growth predicted and a steady decline in sales is predicted.
The future of the airlines profits dependant on whether 2 US domestic
airlines will buy from Boeing.
US analysts have the stock at a mix of hold and sell, while
International analysts have it at dump.
The company grew significantly less than the industry in operates in.
It's lagging behind all market forecasts.
And to quote a stockholder from the AGM, "what are you doing to ensure
Boeing survives as a commercial airline". The answer, a shrug of the
shoulders and a commitment to Defense contracts.

Let the GIGO cycle roll on..
