I thought it was a hoot when I saw the
Associated Press story about the annular eclipse yesterday quoting Stephen Maran and identifying him as being with the "American Astrological Society": http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051003/ap_on_sc/eclipse ....especially since Dr. Maran wrote "Astronomy for Dummies" and apparently is involved in astronomy education on several fronts. But then I did a Web search on that non-existent astrology organization and found 116 references to it. A glance at the list suggested that in most cases the writer meant the American Astronomical Society. But the errors occurred in places you'd never believe, such as a press release from Los Alamos National Laboratory, and a copyright notice for a paper published in the Astrophysical Journal! -- (Charles Packer) ungoogled: mailboxATSIGNcpacker.org http://cpacker.org/whatnews |
