Default JN Bahcall gone...

AP has reported that John Norris Bahcall died at 70. He is given
credit for the "flipping neutrino" analysis and for being a long-time
major advocate of the Hubble Space Telescope.

I had the privilege of working with Bahcall in the 90's on several
occasions. Even after I left academia, our paths crossed occasionally
and I last saw him here in Washington DC last year when he led the
discussions about the future of the Hubble telescope.

Before I started grad school I had read _Neutrino Astrophysics_ but
only later did I realize how much he completely defined the field. How
he didn't get the Nobel prize in 2002 I'll never figure out, but I'm
sure the prize meant nothing compared to John's tireless work to
resolve the solar neutrino problem and secure both interest and funding
for nuclear astrophysics and astrophysics in general.

He completely defined the field of astrophysics that I specialized in,
but he also did so much more. I will miss him, his efforts, and the
urgent E-mails he sent followed up by faxes telling me to read my
E-mail :-).

Tim.

Thanks for this note.

....Ok, since Tim's in mourning, I'll be lenient and let him out of
Killfile Hell. Condolences where applicable, natch.
