Default 80s Rumors of All Military Orbiters

In the early to mid 80s there were rumors that the US Military owned
NASA type space orbiters of its own that had no names but only numbers.
Were there ever any such orbiters or was it possibly do to somebody
hearing military radio traffic that didn't use orbiter names?
