I'd like to thank those who helped me with my recent quest for '60s and
'70s era information. (paulo, did you get my e-mail reply?) I suspected the NASA archives would be a help, but I wasn't certain how to do a fruitful search; I didn't even think about the various tech manuals. I also found some decent pics of Ulysses at the JPL homepage. Probably the highest priority on my list at the moment is a good quality copy of Viking's first picture from the Martian surface, the footpad pic. I've found a good source for the panorama, but the best I've got for the footpad shot is a TINY unlinkable thumbnail-size. That was after about a dozen google attempts. Can anyone do better? also, did Viking 2 take a similar pic for its first? I assume it did, but I don't recall ever seeing one at the time. (I lost most of my newspaper clippings and files in a garage fire several years ago.) |

It's not as large, but here's the first Viking 2 surface picture, showing he same view: http://ails.arc.nasa.gov/Images/Astr...011-2-8_a.jpeg A really good way to go looking for things like this is via a Google search using "images"- this photo was on the first page of images that came up when I typed in "first viking 2 photo" as the search criteria. |

First surface photo is the last one down the page. http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/BROWSE/ALLGRIN_126.html They have it in a lot of sizes, up to immense. That search criteria might also get you a picture of the Vice-President of the Vikings. ;-) Rusty |

Also happened to be just ahead of a white van marked with TOS shuttle markings- the door for the fuel cap marked "Fuel Port", red stripes on the side, etc., along with "USS Code Talker" marked on it in several places, and a Starfleet Marines decal. Tried to get the gal's attention by waiving the Andorian doll I just happened to have on my dashboard (picked it up in Vegas recently at Mecca for Dorks/Star Trek: The Experience). Still having problems getting the images out of the camera. Might have to spring for a proper card reader. I managed to get a few shots of the van. I suspect when my wife sees it she will look at me and say "HELL NO!". |

As a general rule, I would stay far, far, away from any woman who would drive something like that. At the very least she is probably a little odd in the head; at the worst she is a Salt Vampire luring Trekkies to a horrible doom. Tried to get the gal's attention by waiving the Andorian doll I just happened to have on my dashboard (picked it up in Vegas recently at Mecca for Dorks/Star Trek: The Experience). If you see her again you ask a passerby describe her to you...and you make sure that their description matches what you are seeing. Another thing to watch out for is any van has a overpowering honey-like odor about it, and seems to be driven by a sparkling vapor of some sort. Still having problems getting the images out of the camera. Might have to spring for a proper card reader. I managed to get a few shots of the van. (Pat looked at the pictures, but they showed a green Romulan reconnaissance vehicle with Denise Crosby at the wheel. The new cloaking technology was not yet perfected in all wavelengths apparently.) I suspect when my wife sees it she will look at me and say "HELL NO!". And box you on your pointed ears. :-) Pat |
