Well that would be the first thing *I* would do now that O'Keefe is gone.

How long and with what justification can you see the Hubble having.. erm,
grammar problem in my brain today... OK so some ground based systems can do more, but is there still some use for the old hardware that could be done cheaply, ie cheaper than a new telescope. Pity they cannot bring it back in one piece though, some experiments on space exposure would never need to be run. It is rare for an acting administrator at *any* agency to make drastic changes of policy... The one thing he might do is to put a hold on any irrevocable actions taken by O'Keefe to close down preparations for the shuttle visit, thus preserving the option of a servicing mission until O'Keefe's replacement either confirms or changes the policy decision. -- "Think outside the box -- the box isn't our friend." | Henry Spencer -- George Herbert | |

What is needed is a Hubble replacement, as Hubble is getting long in the tooth. Yes, you could just keep upgrading, but that does get to a point where you run into diminishing returns. Besides, plenty of other things besides *one* solitary piece of 70s era technology (admittedly a successful one) need the new Administrator's attention. ![]() "Allen Newman" Well that would be the first thing *I* would do now that O'Keefe is gone. because.....? it just feels good? At least the data that has accumulated was worth the effort, if one can put a price on that sort of thing. Back in the 50s and 60s I figured that we had already seen most of what was there to see. Astronomy has been a dark horse, yielding an amazing amount of new insight for an old science. |
