....Funny you should bring that up. Sci-Fi is doing a 4-hour remake for
next fall.

Let's hope Stardust has better luck - and if not, that Fred Hoyle was
wrong.

Even 30 or so years after that film, they *still* don't teach doctors how to
properly open spacecraft carrying alien spores. I'll bet they still use a
hammer and chisel!

....From what I've been able to gather from the various sources, the
film's only going to update Crichton's original material insofar as
how much modern computer and microscopic technology has advanced, with
the only major change being that Andromeda will turn out to be a
nanite, which will raise the debate as to whether nanomachines that
reproduce themselves are life forms, etc, etc.

....The team will probably be also be more racially balanced, although
I seriously wonder where they're going to find someone like Kate Reid
to play Ruth Levitt and present the true "Odd Man" of the group.(*)

(*) In the novel, Levitt was male and straight. Robert Wise decided to
shake the mix up a bit, and cast Reid in the role.

That's going to ruin the whole subtle point of the book, to wit; lifeforms
of non-earth origin were not likely to be inimical to earthlike lifeforms,
so they were looking at the upper levels of the earth's atmosphere. The
implication being that Andromeda had started out as a surface dweller ( or
alternately, that the surface dwellers started out in the upper atmosphere)
and therefore had enough similarity to be a threat.
Since there have never been any nanites in earth prehistory either up there
or down here, we're left postulating independent evolution, which raises the
original question about origins and why they would be a biological threat.

Of course, your mileage may vary...

genesis project/spiderweb 2gather stardust/Phoenix TPAS

the genesis space sample-return project has crashed
in usa. the fate of its glass collection plates is unknown.
the parachute/s did not deploy.

maybe the helicopter intercept blew the parachute inside out- NO.

kay.L. gave a powerpoint presentation to TPAS on Sund. 5-9-04.
the title slide showed a dewy spiderweb. the curve should
be a catenary uniform chain (cosh, or non-uniform funicular-
tonyaj) curve?
In PowerPoint
the curve was apparently suspended upside down, like ^ not u.
not a good sign.

but the genesis capsule may be snagged by a helicopter arm.
We have a problem!! (Houston.)

a parachute needs still air for uplift/ anti-gravity.
if a helicopter tries to catch the parachute, then the
rotor downdraught should accelerate the fall of the
capsule. the parachute may flip upside down + be
largely ineffective.

maybe the helicopter intercept blew the parachute inside out- NO.

....Illiterate, psychotic retards like you should never be allowed to
access usenet, much less be given access to a computer, even less so
for a public access dumb terminal.

....Actually, one of the things about the end of that book that
Crichton never followed up on was this throwaway bit about the manned
mission that resulted in a failure because the Polycron seals failed.
Crichton has hinted over the years that he'd written that ending so as
to leave the reader with a question: was it possible that Andromeda
was a germ warfare weapon from outer space after all?

And improved the story. I only just discovered she was a Brit.
