Which Apollo crew holds the official world record for fastest humans?

I seem to recall that it was Apollo 13.

I'm not positive of this answer, but I *think* it was Borman, Lovell and
Anders on Apollo 8. The total payload on that flight was significantly
less massive than on any of the other Apollo lunar missions, and I
believe that their injection speed was slightly higher. I could be
wrong, though.

I am certain that Apollo 8 had the fastest return trajectory of all of
the lunar missions -- a two and a half day return rather than the three
day returns used by later flights. That was because the CSM retained a
larger fuel mass after LOI than the later flights, and Borman wanted to
use some of it to get home faster. Now, I believe that resulted in a
slightly faster entry speed than was encountered by later missions
(though still well within the design parameters of the spacecraft),
which could have exceeded the initial post-TLI velocity on other
flights. But, again, I'm speculating as much as I'm remembering.

I recall that Apollo 16 reached the highest inclination against the
Earth of any manned mission -- its translunar trajectory took it
directly "above" a point at something like 63 dergees north latitude.
But that's a non-sequitur... *smile*...

Hi

It was Apollo 10, who wet a record on the return trip to Earth for the
fastest speed ever travelled by humans - 24,791 mph (still not broken)

Wasn't that one the altitude record?

....Well, before CC Williams augered, Apollo 12's original crew
probably had the most mass of all the Apollo crews, so...

Huh?

....Oh, you said *fastest*, not *fattest*? Nevermind :-P

IIRC, other Apollo flights actually had a higher entry speed.
However, because the *official* record needs to be bettered by a
certain margin (by 1% or better as an example), and no other Apollo
mission could beat it by that margin, Apollo 8 retains the record.

That is why Apollo 8 also holds the official altitude record, despite
the fact that other Apollo missions actually had a higher altitude
(from the surface of the Earth).

At least, I *think* that's how it works...

Apollo 8 has the record, because none of the succeeding Apollo
missions exceeded it by (something like 5%) which are the rules for
setting a new record.

Is that fastest or furthest?

I'm pretty sure the Guinness Book Of Records used to say it was the Apollo
13 crew. That was my instinctive response to the OP's question. Guess I'll
have to take the books down of the shelf tonight
:-)
