2 Deep Purple CDs survived shuttle crash

Associated Press
Nov. 7, 2003 08:30 AM

POTTSDOWN, Pa. - Deep Purple are considering donating some very
special memorabilia to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: two of their
CDs that were on the space shuttle Columbia.

Astronaut Kalpana Chawla was a fan of the band and took three CDs into
space: Deep Purple's "Machine Head" and "Down To Earth," and Rainbow's
"Purpendicular." She also sent the band several e-mails while in
space.

The band was working on their "Bananas" album when the shuttle broke
up on re-entry last February.

The discs were found in the debris, and Chawla's husband gave them
back to the band during their Mexico City concert in September. The
band plan to give the "Machine Head" and "Down To Earth" CDs to the
Rock Hall, but keep the "Purpendicular" one as a personal memento,
since two members of Rainbow are in the current lineup of Deep Purple.

Within an hour of hearing about the shuttle, guitarist Steve Morse
wrote a song called "Contact Lost," which appears on the "Bananas"
album.

He plans to donate the royalties to the families of the astronauts.

That would be Deep Purple's "Machine Head" and "Purpendicular" and
Rainbow's "Down to earth". :^)

Well, they are but Rainbow didn't do "Purpendicular". There weren't
two former Rainbow members in DP at the time of the "Purpendicular"
recording.

Deep Purple weren't the only band whose CD's survived the explosion. Laurel
Clark was a fan of Scottish band Runrig, and took 2 of their albums, "The
Stamping Ground" and "The Cutter and the Clan", up with her. The full
store is he

or http://makeashorterlink.com/?K10542C76 , which links to the above.

Her son and husband travelled to Scotland to meet the band and present them
with the copy of "The Stamping Ground" which had been recovered from the
crash site.

Caught that "error" myself Svante... and somewhat "glaring" an error...

However, the sentiment is not only received, but also wonderful.

As for the albums (CD's) - The choice of "Machine Head" and
"Purpendicular" are EXCELLENT - two of Purple's best, if not THE BEST.

The Rainbow CD is not their best, but the title and cover picture are
eerily appropriate.

Just in case anybody is wondering, here's the All Music Guide entry for that
album... I hope the URL works:

What's the dateline on that Sunday Mail article? It wasn't clear from the story
when it was published.

Details details, Svante, and we might know what album was played by what
band but the rest of the world probably don't give a damn. And then, two
Rainbow-ers in current line-up is true, and where it reads Purpendicular you
should read Down To Earth. Just to correct the corrector.

Well, I caught all that about a second after I hit send. No point in fixing
it after the fact. Fans of the band(s) would catch the obvious errors.
Anyone else wouldn't care. And so it goes.....
