I've been wishing I could get a CCD for my 8" Celestron, but I'm wondering
....could you connect a digital SLR to it and get good pictures?

Yes, absolutely.
Google for astrophotography.
You can buy all kinds of mounting stuff to make this happen. Read up on it,
to avoid unsightly things such as vingetting.

There's a news group, alt.binaries.pictures.astro, where most of the pics
posted are taken with personal cameras. In most cases, with the right
know-how and stacking of pics, you get amazing quality photos.

If your Celestron can track and your camera can keep the shutter open for
30-60 seconds, you can get some amazing images.
