Default Spectral classification of stars

Hello!

I'm preparing a lecture about the history of spectral analysis (esp.
as used in astronomy) for my local astronomy club. Right now I'm
reading about the creation of the spectral classification. I've
stumbled into two ladies: Annie Jump Cannon and Antonia Maury. Annie
J. Cannon is generally credited with the creation of the Harvard
classification, but Antonia Maury also seems to have made some major
contributions considering that Eijnar Hertzsprung used her
classification system for his famous diagram.

Can anyone tell me more about Miss Maury's contribution, its influence
on the eventual Harvard classification and the differences between
hers and Miss Cannon's? Or can anyone point me to respective
information on the Web.

Thank you for your help,

Piter

Hello Piter, Mr. Edward Pickering Astronomer was her boss at
Harvard Observatory way back then and who hired her under the request of
her father. Sadly there was a true paper authorship, system
classification, and mostly salary conflict and Miss Maury finally left
for a teaching position. She returned to her studies of spectroscopic
binaries under Harlow Shapley when he took over Pickering's job.
Remember women didn't even have the right to vote back then. Her
profound discoveries were and are the system basis towards modern
stellar astrophysics. A most brilliant capable scientist of the highest
caliber, diligence, and award winning proficiency.
