Default did Neil Amstrong get his words wrong

apparently he got those famous words slightly wrong, what was the intended
version?

I wonder if they are working on the first steps for Mars statement?

All he missed out was the short word... "a"

"This is one small step for *a* man; one giant leap for mankind."

The word "a" gives a completely different meaning to the sentence.
Although I think everybody still understood what he meant. It was only a
grammatical error.

I believe Armstrong swore that he said it, and still believes the word
was lost in a switching transient over the earthlink. Even NASA's master
tapes don't contain the letter.

I think apolloarchive.com has more information - but if it doesn't AA is
a wonderful record anyway.

I wonder what George W Bush would have come out with if he'd been the
first man on the moon? I bet he'd start with "I'd like to thank our
Moomin hosts for their hopitalisation."

No, he'd have got lost on the way, ended up back on earth, decided that it's
the fault of terrorists and started several wars.

Neil Armstrong has said that having listened to the recording of that moment, he now think that he did probably forget to say the "a". But has added that he would be happy if was added to text of the speech in parenthesis.

Well we know for a fact what Teddyboy Kennedy was doing on that day -
trying to explain to the DA why he let a young girl drown on
Chappaquidock in his car, and why he didn't report the accident.
Bubba Clinton was probably getting a blow job in the bed of his pick
up.

Or: "There is no closer friend of America than this here crater."
