Hi All,
I looked up today while out for a walk this evening, and noticed a bright star next to the moon. Any ideas what this is? PS: I think someone said it was Venus or Mars. Cheers |

Cheers Both were close to the Moon last night, but the one you would have seen was Venus. Mars is quite faint. -- Save the Hubble Space Telescope! Remove spam and invalid from address to reply. |

The really bright, white object, that was Venus. Mars was also close to
the moon last night but isn't nearly as prominent - a small red star-like fleck. Also close by was Saturn. Cheers Almost certainly Venus you're referring to. Here's a shot of Venus and the Moon taken last night. The fainter one at about the 8 o'clock position is Mars. The inset shows the relative apparent sizes of these objects, viewed from Earth, compared by artificially bringing them close together. Notice the tiny crescent of Venus next the massive crescent of the Moon. http://www.pbl33.fast24.co.uk/627_2725a.jpg -- Pete Lawrence http://www.pbl33.co.uk Astronomy and digital imaging website (last update 28-03-04) |
