Simple answer: bigger number, bigger size.

EQ1 = tiny
EQ2 = small
EQ3 = slightly bigger, still small
EQ4 = gettin' there...

and so on.

Hi Kevin,

Basically as you go up the numbers you are buying more stability (a key
requirement for any mount) and load carrying capacity. Additionally the Eq1
has only limited slow motion adjustment in Declination so can only be
motorised in one axis.

IMO there is a trend for commercial scope kits to be undermounted. If you
can afford it you will not regret going up one mount size from the minimum
offered. If you want to do astrophotography then sell your children/granny
to buy the beefiest mount you can

Thanks chaps! There was me thinking it was all technical.

I just purchased a scope it came this morning, and I've spend the last
couple of hours puttin' it all together. It has an EQ3 mount, seems
very heavy and sturdy to me.

Of course, it goes without saying, it's going to be cloudy for the
next week. You can blame me (and the other newbies in the group hehe)
