Dear Friends,

I just received my Feb/2004 issue of AN and which represents
only the second issue I have received so far as a result of my new
subscription and would to complement you on the fine magazine coming out
of Britain. If there is a better European effort, please let me know! :-)

I wish we had 5% the effort and quality locally. Our only
publication in Greece, a pseudo-magazine containing mostly cartoons and
drawings in lieu of actual photos, supposedly comes out quarterly and is
delivered three to four months late without exception.

Anthony.

Popular Astronomy magazine from SPA is a very good UK magazine:
http://www.popastro.com/

As for AN, the quality does ebb and flow as editors come and go. When
I visited the U.S. in 2001 I happened upon Sky and Telescope magazine.
When I returned home I canceled my AN subscription. S&T made me
realize how much of a rag AN had become.

Could not agree more, "Astronomy" and "Sky & Telescope" are far superior
magazines.

Tom/Steve,

I also subscribe to S&T and Astronomy magazines from the US but I
guess it is an issue of things being relative. The local effort here is
something worse than a rag and, as such, AN is a serious step up. The
first two issues received so far with my new subscription to AN have not
disappointed mr at all and hopefully things will continue to be the same
or better.

Clear skies!

Anthony.

Astronomy Now is a bit of a mixed bag, IMO.

Owen Brazell's deep sky articles were a favourite - much better than those
in Sky and Telescope, or Astronomy. But they have been ditched.

Sometimes the editing also leaves a lot to be desired - the "Society" page
is a disaster. They really need to develop a bit of "news sense". On the
other hand they have some really good writers, capable of first class work.

As for "Astronomy", it was becoming a bit of a joke until the latest editor
took over. Recently it's much improved.

Over the three I do prefer Sky and Telescope, although some of the articles
are a bit like walking through treacle.

It's a couple of years since I saw it (someone I used to live near used
to get it; my French isn't brilliant), but my opinion was both.

Best,
Stephen

I agree that Ciel et Espace is very good. I used to buy it in Belgium
(where it was reasonably priced). And I think Astronomy Now is pretty
good as a UK magazine for amateur astronomy information and events.

But if you want a really heavyweight amateur astronomy magazine the
Japanese Tenmon Guide is incredible (but a *very* difficult read).

Regards,

Another French magazine I prefer much more is called "Astronomie", it seems
to be a little more difficult to find. I find they do more practical
objective articles both for practical articles and reviews. They also do
some very good star charts for the monthly things to do.
