Default Stupd damned simulaitons

Hi all,

Sorry if I annoy, but on Australian TV news I have just watched a segment
on the rings of Saturn. We had the usual pic of a huge Saturn and it's
rings, and, in FRONT, a pic of the Cas. probe that took the pics. What
annoys is that time after time we see a pic or animation of the probe
responsible in front of the object of interest. This for me totally
destroyes credibility as I know that this picture/video could not have been
taken, thus is a fake, or at least, the foreground probe is a fake. Why do
they do it? Why not just show the bloody pic!

I did wonder how the cameraman got there to take a picture of the probe.

The companies that do the simulations have a foothold.

It's the same with current movies. Thy are tailor made for Special effects
producers, thereby making big bucks for them.

It's not only space segments which are 'sexed up' in the manner you
describe. For instance, I've never seen TV footage of whales cavorting in
the ocean without recourse to slow motion footage. This occurs to exaggerate
the size of the animal.

Not forgetting the telephoto focal length which accentuates the whole thing.

Because that's what most people ( ie those who knows nothing about
astronomy ) wants to see.

If you are really that annoyed, then you surely not watch tv series
like StarTrek! Here we have the Enterprise right in the middle of
nowhere illuminated by... something (there are no nearby stars) making
a kind of deep engine noise (no air to transmit the sound) etc...

Stanley Kubrick got it almost right in "2001, a space odyssey".
There, Discovery makes no noise while travelling to Saturn but there
is a whole orchestra floating in space nearby because we can hear the
music!!!

Have a good night!

Benoît...
