Did anyone else see PQT today ?.
an MP (think name was Tom Harris) raised the question about light pollution, after a few seconds into his Q to Blair the whole house fell about laughing. Seems like there's more chance of getting on the moon with a step ladder than this lot doing any thing. -- Barry If it ain't broke-don't fix it /\ ~ /} ( ' o' ) ( ¥ (,) ¿¿J |

Are you sure it was light pollution and not political integrity? -- Pete Homepage at http://www.pbl33.co.uk CCD/digicam astronomy |

I suppose when the Government can't even get many inner city kids able to write their own name in ink, worrying about them not seeing the night sky seems to pale into insignificance. Interesting comment about the Milky Way only being observable from (I think he said) 30% of the Country, I can occasionally see it in Ashford where I do suffer significant light pollution, but it's more to do with the lack of really clear skies not the light levels. Last night for example it was beautifully clear (until I got my telescope out of course) and I could see far more stars than normal, yet the light pollution level was no different to normal. Martin |

I think Barry just missed seeing the quote. Perhaps any demand for action on the LP front should be accompanied by a long list of names on pieces of paper. Politicians usually fail to respond to (or indeed, comprehend) reasoned argument, they do sometimes respond to petitions where they can count the number of disgruntled voters. Snip However cynical you may be about MP's etc. do not lose sight of the fact that the question was allowed by the Speaker and, therefore, becomes a matter of written record. It was also significant that the PM had briefing notes on the subject which he read and therefore his answer becomes a matter of written record. Further all those watching and listening to PM's questions will now know that light pollution is a matter of fact and concern to some of us. Norman |

They are also too busy approving a 400ft high fence of windmills round the Lake District National Park boundary to provide the power for all these extra lights :-( /RANT Robin |
