It's an Cosmic Double-Header!
First, from 1-4pm, check out the exciting activities at "Astronomy and Chemistry Day" at the Cranbrook Institute of Science! Join members of the Warren Astronomical Society and the American Chemical Society for an afternoon of exploring the Universe! Get an up-close look at the different kinds of telescopes that astronomers use. Make star-charts and perform hands-on chemistry experiments. The Institute's Observatory will be open for viewing the sun safely in hydrogen alpha light (weather permitting). Astronaut Jack Lousma (Colonel, USMC, Ret.) will share his experiences on Apollo/Skylab and the Shuttle, and talk about the future of spaceflight. Other astronomy experts will be on hand to answer your questions about space. (Seating for Col. Lousma's talk is limited - please check the Cranbrook web site or call 877.Go.Cranbrook for more information.) The Cranbrook Institute of Science is located on the west side of Woodward (M-1), between Lone Pine and Long Lake roads, north of Birmingham. For the second game of the Cosmic Double-Header (weather permitting), join the Warren Astronomical Society at sunset for "A Night Under the Stars" at their Stargate Observatory! Enjoy the planets, the stars, and distant galaxies! Stargate Observatory features a 12.5 inch f/17 club-built Cassegrain telescope under a classic dome; many other telescopes will likely be available for the public to view through. The Stargate Observatory is located on the grounds of Camp Rotary on 29 Mile Road, 1.8 miles east of Romeo Plank Road. Look for the Rotary Camp sign and turn in. The Observatory is located about 1,000 feet from the entrance, on the right. For more information, call 877.Go.Cranbrook, or visit the Cranbrook Institute of Science website, http://www.cranbrook.edu; click on the Institute of Science link, then Upcoming Events button. Also, visit the Warren Astronomical Society web site at: http://www.boonhill.net/was ¤ Hoping for clear skies! See you there!
