On what day is the earth closest to the sun?
And what day is the earth farthest from the sun? Do these dates change over time due to earth's precession? -D.D. |

We were closest to the Sun January 4 2004 at about 91,345,800 miles. We
will be farthest from the Sun in June if I remember right. And I don't have a clue about your other question but I'm hoping to learn from other posts. I did a piece in my January news letter as a factoid thing. I do a monthly news letter to give me something specific to study each month and a side benefit is that I can share that knowledge with my readers. (all seven of them). -- Michael A. Barlow "David W. On what day is the earth closest to the sun?
Hi: What you mean is "aphelian" and "perihelion"... The exact date varies, but, if I recall, January and July for Perihelion and Aphelion, respectively. Just FYI, the subject heading should be "When is Earth at apohelion and perihelion." The words come from the Greek: "apo-" means "away from," "peri-" means "about" and is used for the closest point, "-gee" comes from "ge" which is Greek for Earth, and "-helion" comes from Helios, meaning the Sun. So, anyway... I just ran a quick calculation with xEphemeris* that shows Earth was at perihelion around January 4 of this year, and will be again January 3 next year. Aphelion will occur around July 4 this year. Matt T * xEphemeris is an awesome app that will calculate and plot just about any astronomical info you could want. It does, however, only run on Unix/Linux/MacOSX operating systems. And this reference to this app and these non-Windows OSs may unleash the vitriol of certain readers of this group who are not mature or self-secure enough to allow that some folks can use non-Windows systems and do good work and be happy. Be warned, and ignore them. |
